Useful information

The Australian Paediatric Research Network (APRN) website has useful information to guide new and budding researchers. Included is advice on how to:

  • prepare a research flowchart
  • design a research protocol
  • develop a research question
  • develop your study design
  • decide what to measure
  • apply for funding
  • ensure your study is ethical
  • manage your data
  • report and present your findings

The World Health Organisation (WHO) also offers advice on designing a study protocol.

If you are uncertain whether your study requires approval by an ethics committee, you can visit the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee website.

Nick Feamster and Alex Grey have put together a great website for academics called How To Do Great Research. It covers the art of writing, reviewing papers, cultivating research taste and time management.

The main sources of research funding accessed by New Zealand universities are listed on the Universities NZ website. Key New Zealand sources of research funding are summarised on the University of Auckland and University of Otago websites.

Thinking about undertaking a randomised controlled trial (RCT)? You will need to:

  • Develop a study protocol and register it with an international database such as the ANZCTR
  • Register for ethical and locality approval via an organisation such as HDEC in New Zealand or AHEC in Australia
  • Obtain funding for your study
  • Identify a suitable journal for publication
  • Draft your paper according to CONSORT guidelines

Thinking about undertaking a systematic review or umbrella review? You will need to:

  • Develop a review protocol and register it with an international database such as PROSPERO
  • Use quality appraisal tools such as the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for quantitative studies and the AMSTAR 2 tool for systematic reviews
  • Identify a suitable journal for publication
  • Draft your paper according to PRISMA guidelines
